Building Standards for Gas Systems

  • Installing or replacing gas lines for stoves, fireplaces, water heaters, or HVAC systems.
  • Upgrading existing gas systems to meet current safety standards.
  • Adding outdoor gas features such as fire pits or barbecue connections.

Title 24 is divided into specific parts addressing various aspects of construction. Key sections for gas systems include:

  1. California Plumbing Code (CPC):

    • Covers the installation and maintenance of gas piping systems, appliances, and vents.
    • Includes requirements for gas line sizing, pressure testing, and venting.

  2. California Mechanical Code (CMC):

    • Governs the design and installation of gas appliances, including furnaces, water heaters, and fireplaces.
    • Addresses combustion air requirements and venting specifications for gas appliances.

  3. California Energy Code:

    • Enforces energy efficiency standards for gas appliances such as water heaters and furnaces.
    • Includes guidelines for high-efficiency equipment and related system upgrades.

  4. California Residential Code (CRC):

    • Provides standards for gas systems and appliances in one- and two-family dwellings.
    • Includes safety requirements for gas connections in kitchens, laundry areas, and outdoor spaces.

  5. California Electrical Code (CEC):

    • Regulates electrical connections for gas appliances requiring power, such as gas ranges or tankless water heaters.
